Our community’s Rural Character will be supported by facilitating strong local ties and communication between the public, organizations, and government; promoting locally owned businesses and supporting quality education; protecting the environment, and maintaining landowners’ rights and responsibilities; promoting controlled and well-planned growth with appropriate infrastructure; ensuring proper representation for rural interests and needs; and supporting the health and safety and the privacy of our vibrant community.
Puget Sound Regional Council VISION 2050 (p.40):
“Rural Areas are expected to retain important cultural, economic, and rural lifestyle opportunities in the region over the long term. They are not intended to be served with urban services or accommodate a significant amount of residential or employment growth. VISION 2050 calls for reduced rural population growth rates in all counties. Counties are encouraged to plan for even lower growth—where possible—than contained in the Regional Growth Strategy.”

Joint Team
Multiple unincorporated area organizations collaborate to provide residents a voice with their “local” government, King County.
In April 2025 the Joint Rural team (JRT) expanded into the Joint Team (JT) by adding three Urban Unincorporated Area organizations: Fairwood, Skyway, and West Hill.
Currently, the GMVUAC’s Regional Coordinator serves as the Joint Team’s Coordinator.

NOTICE OF 2017 SURVEY AND ELECTION

PLEASE NOTE that, due to the GMVUAC website's brief period of unavailability, online responses to our 2017 Survey/Election will be accepted, and the Form will be kept live, through Monday, December 18, 2017. Mailed and/or hand delivered paper ballots will also be received through Monday, December 18, 2017. Summary of results will be based on all responses, online or otherwise, received through Monday, December 18, 2017. All persons living in unincorporated King County within the Tahoma School District boundaries (i.e., outside of any City limits) are invited to participate.
December Meeting
The Area Council will hold its regular monthly meeting on Monday, December 4, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Maple Valley fire station (SE corner of intersection of SE 231st St & SR-169).
Fred Jarrett to lead initiative on excellence in unincorporated services and municipal contracts
Executive Constantine announced that Senior Deputy Executive Fred Jarrett will lead an initiative to explore new and better ways to serve the people of unincorporated King County.

The GMVUAC serves the residents of unincorporated King County living in the Tahoma School District No. 409 (outside the city limits of Maple Valley). Our Washington nonprofit corporation was established in 1977; we serve a population of 16,100 (2010 Census); and our service area is 116 sq mi.
